Jimmy Carter National Historic Site is the most popular attraction in Plains Georgia. Visitors from around the world come to see the home where former President Jimmy Carter grew up, the high school he and First Lady Rosalyn attended and the train depot from which the Peanut Express carried this Plains son to his inauguration as the 39th President of the United States.
The Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm is a destination on the Sam Shortline train excursion. Plains High School where the Carters attended is a museum and visitors center. The museum and visitors center features exhibits on the Carters' life in Plains, pre and post-presidency. The Rosalyn Carter Gallery features exhibits and displays on the life and work of wife of the 39th President. The Seaboard Train Depot served as the Jimmy Carter Campaign Headquarters. Now a museum, it features exhibits on the Carter 1976 Presidential Campaign.
Activities in Plains include the Plains Peanut Festival in September. Sam Shortline train has a special run during the festival.
